The Cabot Lady Panthers volleyball team suffered through a rough season in 2017 but fifth-year coach Kham Chanthaphasouk is optimistic for this season.

Cabot finished 9-22, missing the Class 7A state tournament for the first time since 2011.

“We lost only one senior last year,” Chanthaphasouk said, referring to team captain Mollie Johnson. “They were all juniors and sophomores last year. This year, we have seven seniors with varsity experience.”

The seniors on this year’s team include: Kallie Cavin, Morgan Brown, Ashlee Wilkerson, Sydney Teer, Hayden Chapman, Devyn Britt and Caitlyn Rogers.

“This year, we kept 23 girls,” Chanthaphasouk said. “We had a very good pool of girls to choose from during tryings. We had over 40 try out. We were going to keep 20 to 22 in the beginning then we realized that we were going to cut some really good players.”

Chanthaphasouk said about 12 of those 23 will see time on the varsity squad.

“They are not all going to play regularly but I wanted to give some juniors and sophomores some varsity experience.”

The 2018 season got started for the Lady Panthers during a team camp at Benton High School during late July.

“We looked really good at our team camp,” Chanthaphasouk said. “We competed against Conway, Benton and Batesville. They are all very good teams and we competed with them the whole time.

“We had a very good team camp.”

Cabot played in a benefit scrimmage for the Arkansas Activities Association Catastrophic Insurance Fund on Tuesday at Conway. The Lady Panthers open the regular season Tuesday at Panther Arena against Benton. The junior varsity match starts at 5 p.m. with the varsity match... Click here to read full article
