With four swim meets underway, the boy’s and girl’s Panther Swim Teams are looking strong. Their strength comes from not only their depth in numbers but from swimmers who are currently ranked among the fastest in the state.

The Panthers began their season on November 3 by hosting the Cabot Classic where the boy’s and girl’s teams won first place out of the six teams that competed. The boys beat North Little Rock 782-304, and the girls, with no close opponent, beat Russellville 654-292.

The girls relay team of Jessica Bongfeldt, Rachel Montanaro, Emma Echard and Abigail Breedlove dominated the first event, the 200 medley relay, by coming in first by nearly nine seconds to the Panther’s B relay team of Jordan Godbee, Shea Copeland, Izzy Dulin and Samantha Scott. The boys relay team of Tristen Bowen, Jason Bongfeldt, Alex Layman and Dylan Worden matched the girl’s effort in the same event by out touching North Little Rock to take first with a time of 1:45.70. Both swims were fast enough to earn a spot at the state championship meet.

The girls continued the winning streak in the 200 freestyle where A. Breedlove lead the heat by 14 seconds and Cabot’s Savannah Gilmore touched in third. Chase Foiles touched second for the boys, and Cabot claimed the next five finishes.

In the 200 individual medley, Echard finished first for the girls in a time of 2:27.77, narrowly beating out team mate Sarah Breedlove by 25 one hundreths of a second, and Bowen picked up first for the boys in a time of 2:04.00. Teammate Jason Bongfeldt finished second in a time of 2:11.17. Both of the boy’s times were good enough to qualify for state.

In shortest event of the meet, it was Montanaro who won the 50 free for the girls in a time of 26.93.

Cabot swept the field in the girl’s 100 butterfly with Jessica Bongfeldt placing first with a state qualifying time of 1:02.93, which is the fourth fastest time in the 6-7A central district. Layman won the boys heat in 57.03 seconds.

A. Breedlove swam a first place state time of 58.16 in the 100 freestyle.

Next up, sister and teammate S. Breedlove won the longest event of the night, the 500 freestyle, in a time of 5:55.58, and Worden won it for the boys.

In the 200 freestyle relays, the girls and boys claimed the top two places respectively and earned state times.

Jessica Bongfeldt, who is a freshman, won her second event of the night in the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:03.78, which qualifies her for state. Bowen also won his second event of the meet with a state time of 56.25 in the same event.

The girls scored two more state times in the 100 breaststroke as Montanaro took first in 1:08.94 and Copeland finished second. Layman lead the field for the men with a state time of 1:04.89.

The girls closed the meet with the final win and state time of the night. The Panthers earned fourteen state cuts which is the most events they have ever qualified for in one meet.

On November 9, the Panthers traveled to Bryant for the 2017 November Invite. The girls won with Bryant High School coming in second 441-362 out of 11 schools. The boys finished second to Conway with 466-533.5 out of 11 schools.

The girls relay of Jessica Bongfeldt, Montanaro, Melanie Abbott and A. Breedlove started out by winning the 200 medley relay while the boys team of Auston Melton, JD Lindsey, Josh Chapa and Foiles finished third.

In the 200 freestyle, Abbott placed first in 2:11.00, and following her was Scott and Dulin who touched third and fourth. Bowen improved his time by almost five seconds to touch second in a state time of 1:49.91.

Two more state cuts were achieved in the girls 200 individual medley by Montanaro who placed first and A. Breedlove who touched fourth. Layman swam a state time of 2:08.43 for second, Chapa placed third and Foiles finished fourth.

Melton sprinted the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.73, which put him in second place.

The boys showed their incredible depth again in the 100 butterfly where they claimed four out of the top eight places: Layman placed second, Jason Bongfeldt in third, Lindsey in fourth and Worden in sixth.

It was S. Breedlove again from Cabot who swam the 500 freestyle event and placed third. Worden matched her performance with a third place finish as well.

The girls 200 freestyle relay was a nail biting finish, as the team of S. Breedlove, Echard, Dulin and Abbott was out touched by nine one hundreths of a second and placed second. Bongfeldt, Worden, Layman and Bowen finished second for the boys.

Foiles scored more points for the boys with his third place finish in the 100 backstroke.

Jessica Bongfeldt destroyed the competition in the 100 breaststroke with a six second win over second place and a state time of 1:10.06. Bowen and Jason Bongfeldt picked up second and third places in the same event with state qualifying times.

The meet was concluded with another pair of first place finishes for the Panthers in the 400 freestyle relay by the girl’s team of Jessica Bongfeldt, Montanaro, Echard and A. Breedlove and the boy’s team of Layman, Worden, Jason Bongfeldt and Bowen.

The Panthers swam in the Wampus Cat Invitation in Conway on December 7, battling it out against one of the Panther’s toughest competitors in the 6-7A central district, the Conway Wampus Cats. The girls placed second to Springdale High School 420-462 out of 13 teams. The boys also finished second by small margins to Conway High School 453-512 due to multiple disqualifications.

The girls were edged out by Conway in the 200 medley relay placing second, and they scored another second place finish in the 200 freestyle by Abbott in a time of 2:09.37.

The boys were off to a rough start with a disqualification in the 200 medley relay, but Layman made up the difference by beating out Conway’s Ty Wingfield by three one hundredths of a second.

Jessica Bongfeldt took second with a state time of 2:22.13 in the girls 200 individual medley.

Cabot claimed three places in the top eight in the boy’s 50 freestyle with Chapa in second, Melton in third and John Breedlove finishing fourth.

Dulin placed third in the girl’s 100 butterfly in a time of 1:08.75. In the boys event, Lindsey placed second with a time of 59.20, and Jason Bongfeldt trailed Lindsey for third place, touching just 15 tenths behind him.

The girls in the 100 freestyle took the top two spots with Montanaro winning in a time of 58.86 and Echard in second.

The girls were dominate in the 500 freestyle with a first place finish for S. Breedlove and a second place finish from Copeland. The boys followed the girls lead with a first place finish from Layman and a second place finish from Worden.

The girls won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:47.81, and the boys placed second.

Jason Bongfeldt touched third in the boy’s 100 backstroke and Foiles touched fourth.

Montanaro, Bowen and Curtis McElroy closed out the last individual event of the night, the 100 breaststroke, with Montanaro finishing second for the girls, Bowen placing first for the boys and McElroy in fourth for the boys.

The meet was concluded with wins from the Panther boy’s and girl’s relay teams in the 400 freestyle relay.

The swim team will resume competition on January 20 at the Cat Fight Invitational Duel against Central High School at ULAR.
